Zurich in the Viewfinder 1850 - 1900
A Welcome to the Archives for Building History at the Landesmuseum Zürich
The National Museum in Zurich
28.4.2007 – 30.9.2007
Zurich 150 years ago: a city on its way up. A railway
junction, a financial centre, a place of industry and higher learning … and,
last but not least, a city under construction, with representative new
buildings, demolition sites and renovation projects, major through roads and
public squares. Zurich was on its way to becoming the Swiss metropolis.
Photography 150 years ago: a new medium in the process of changing the way
people look at the world. Itinerant photographers stopped off in Zurich to
capture buildings old and new on film. Later, native photographers set up shop
and began documenting the transformation of their city as the 19th
century drew to a close.
Valuable original prints from the Archives for Building History offer a
glimpse of a city on the threshold to the 20th century. Discover a chapter of contemporary history.
The exhibition is in German.
